Why does music sound bad played through my guitar amplifier from my laptop?

I have plugged my laptop into my Line 6 70ish watt amp using a 3.5mm adaptor. The sound comes through but crackles/interference is (slightly) audible and it doesn't sound very good, even if I mess with the treble/mid/b knobs.
