A dental question about root c...?

My husband had root c done about two years ago and all was fine until yesterday when pain started suddenly and is getting rapidly worse. He went back to the dentist today and was given a prescription for penicillin and pain meds. He was told to come back next week for a consultation on how to proceed. They will most likely want to do the costly and long procedure over again. My husband would rather just pull the tooth and be done with it. I think he should try to keep the tooth. Any experts out there? Your help will be greatly appreciated.
